Debut festival showcases art of the radio play

“When I see a play on stage, I usually close my eyes and say, ‘Could this be a radio play?’ And about 50% of them can,” says Olson, noting that different genres translate differently into the medium. “I didn’t want it to be all funny ones. I wanted as much variety as possible.”

A new theatre festival in Winnipeg invites listeners to tune in to the expansive world of radio plays, with three productions set to be recorded in front of a live audience at the Gargoyle Theatre this weekend.

Theatre of sound

With the rise of podcasts and audiobooks, which borrow many aspects of the radio play, Olson figured it was the right time to revive this theatrical subgenre by creating the AudiArts Festival, the first and only theatre festival in Canada specifically dedicated to radio plays, running from Oct. 24 to 26 at the Gargoyle Theatre.
